Wildlife

Wildlife surveys are difficult because of the number of species and the difficulty of access in and around volcanoes.  Nicaragua as a whole contains 9% of the world’s biodiversity.  The areas in and around most volcanoes in Nicaragua is highly protected and has an amazing amount of wildlife.  The flora and fauna amazes even the most traveled adventurers.  Butterflies swarm in with several hundred different species and Orchids overpower the senses.  Some areas also have larger animals that live as they have for thousands of years. 

While most species are harmless to humans, there are several species of serpents that are quite poisonous.  There are also several large cats that roam the deep jungle and would not think twice of using force in self-defense.  While these creatures are out there, they rarely cross paths with humans.    

Many bird watchers also come to Nicaragua for the vast diversity of avian species.  The birds of Nicaragua in come in all colors shapes and sizes.
