Nicaragua Volcanoes

Nicaragua Volcano Facts and Information

There are two volcanic ranges in Nicaragua: From Cosiguina Volcano to the Momotombo Los Maribios Range and From Masaya Volcano to the Concepcion Los Pueblos Range.

In ancient Nicaragua, its first inhabitants the Chorotegas considered volcanoes divine. When volcanoes erupted, they believed their gods were angry with them. To appease the gods they chose virgin girls and threw them into the crater.

They also believed that lava flows were melted gold. When the Spaniards heard of rivers of gold they trekked to the volcanoes looking for this illusive treasure.

Nowadays, volcanoes are a source of geothermal energy. A geothermal plant located near Momotombo Volcano produces 9 percent of the total energy in Nicaragua.
