Instructions -
Dear PBLer’s, Animal Farm is a brilliant novel written by a brilliant novelist, Eric Blair, who is also known by his nom de plume (French for ‘pen name’) “George Orwell”. Animal Farm was written at a time when there was great social, economic, political and cultural upheaval following the First, then second World War and subsequently, the beginning of the Cold War. The war between the ‘West’ and the Soviet Union was considered ‘cold’ because they never actively engaged in war with each other but only through their ‘proxies’; other countries fighting for them against other countries or engaging in civil wars. Most post WW2 conflicts were started and/or supported by the USA/West and the USSR. For example, East and West Germany, Korea, Vietnam, Angola, Mozambique, Ethiopia, Cuba, Guatemala, Afghanistan……the list goes on and so could I!

Anyways! If you are interested in winning the mobile phone the competition is open to anyone. Just answer the question below in 1200-1500 words, make sure you reference your sources and provide a bibliography (see attached scaffold). Print out the essay and give to Mr. Hendry in week 6.

Actual Question -

QUESTION:
Assess the effectiveness of Orwell’s use of a fable in critiquing Soviet Communism and Stalinism.
TIPS: The question is asking candidates to assess (make a judgement) of how well or poorly Orwell conveys his message (his criticisms of the soviet system and Stalin) through his use of his animal characters and related concepts (e.g. ‘animalism’) and through the his story telling (fable).
